Heirs, Beware

An inheritance can be a comfort following the loss of a loved one. For a disabled or vulnerable person, for whom a fulfilling life will almost always cost more in terms of services, access and support, the extra cash can also be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to secure the extra freedoms that their non-disabled peers take for granted. However, if you are a disabled or vulnerable person receiving services and state benefits, an inheritance can actually leave you worse off. Because the money you inherit is considered when calculating your benefits and any payments you make towards your care and support services, you might actually lose your means-tested benefits and entitlements until your inheritance fund falls below the government threshold.
